in my recovery journey. i was encouraged to get a service commitment in my home group and to show up for that commitment. ironically, my commitment gig, started even before i got clean, for real. even when i was just fronting my recovery, i showed for service in a group that was never going to be my home group, in a fellowship that i would soon leave and never look back. when i arrived in recovery, in the fellowship that been my home fro a very long minute, i had already established that i could commit to service, and now i could make that commitment for all the correct reasons with no ulterior motives or attempts to look better in the eyes of my peers,
when i serve my home group today, i often feel as if there are one or two of us that are holding it together, just to keep the lights on. i know that is not the case, but getting our home group members to step up for service is not the easiest task in the world. i am almost ready to revert to the just “throw them in the deep end and see if they can swim” method of getting someone to serve. that was certainly the manner in which i was introduced to Area Service and i survived. times, however, are different and the fellowship is not as desperate or as sparse as it once was. i know that exercising patience and kindness is the path to getting my peers to serve and in the mean time, i just need to honor my commitment to suit up, show up and be present for my home group. the most important part of serving is to keep the lights on, so those who are seeking can find their way through the darkness and into the rooms.
