α i truly believe that **i can only keep what i have by giving it away.** ω

the paradox of the Twelfth Step is evident, for in giving, i receive. in fact i had do do a bit of twelfth step work last night. here i sit, far from my home, on vacation, with no hot water and yet my phone still rings. it was a newcomer i met over the past weekend, who was struggling with dealing with the human condition. did i keep him in the rooms? i do not know, that was hardly my intention, my intent was to help a fellow addict through a tough patch, by providing a rational voice against the howl of his disease. i will see what the results are, further down the line. for me, the results are already manifest, i did not use, i do not have the desire to use, and i am choosing to do what it takes to stay in recovery. which for today is being present for my significant other’s family. so it is time to scrape off a bit of yesterday, and return to the rest of those i am sharing this slice of time with up here in the mountains.

☯ The Tao that can be spoken is not the eternal Tao ☯

THE TAO TEH KING, OR THE TAO AND ITS CHARACTERISTICS
by Lao-Tse
Translated by James Legge

Book 2

2) It is only by this moderation that there is effected an early return
(to man's normal state). That early return is what I call the repeated
accumulation of the attributes (of the Tao). With that repeated accumulation
of those attributes, there comes the subjugation (of every obstacle
to such return). Of this subjugation we know not what shall be the
limit; and when one knows not what the limit shall be, he may be the
ruler of a state.
