there was a time when i found the word GOD offensive and i shut out anything anyone said that followed.
there was a time when i feared what GOD would do to punish me for my transgressions.
and there was a time when i did not give a shit whether GOD existed or not.
well none of that is true today -- THANK GOD!
today i am not quite so hung-up on words and am more concerned about the concepts behind the words especially when it comes to my spiritual take on the world that surrounds me. i am not to wax poetically about my concept of THE POWER GREATER THAN ME THAT KEEPS ME CLEAN AND PROVIDES FOR MY NEEDS, rather i will say that i use GOD as a very convenient abbreviation for THE POWER GREATER THAN ME THAT KEEPS ME CLEAN AND PROVIDES FOR MY NEEDS. after all i am almost as lazy today as when i walked in and still looking for the easier softer way and if i can use a single three letter word instead of a fifty-three letter clause, i will and do.
i was so grateful to find a program that not only paid lip service to the concept of allowing me to choose what THE POWER GREATER THAN ME THAT KEEPS ME CLEAN AND PROVIDES FOR MY NEEDS means, but, actually supported that idea in every single meeting by consciously avoiding prayers from any organized religion.
i was grateful to discover that i could access this power without the intervention of another human being.
i was grateful that i could share openly about my feelings and experiences with the divine without ridicule and with the reassuring nods of those who i choose to share my take on GOD with.
and most of all i was grateful that i could use GOD instead of THE POWER GREATER THAN ME THAT KEEPS ME CLEAN AND PROVIDES FOR MY NEEDS when i shared with others, after all it all about me anyway! well not really what it is about is that our language does not possess the words necessary for me to express what i feel THE POWER GREATER THAN ME THAT KEEPS ME CLEAN AND PROVIDES FOR MY NEEDS is all about, so the word GOD is more than adequate for me to move beyond words and into ideas and feelings about recovery, the divine and THE POWER GREATER THAN ME THAT KEEPS ME CLEAN AND PROVIDES FOR MY NEEDS. it is not that i am insensitive to those who have yet to come to the same realization and when i see someone at a meeting wince at the use of the word GOD, i share with them what was shared with me when i was in that same spot -- that the word GOD is not used to imply endorsement of any concept of the divine, merely used as a convenience for those in the rooms and really means THE POWER GREATER THAN ME THAT KEEPS ME CLEAN AND PROVIDES FOR MY NEEDS.
anyhow back to the reading -- regardless of the term i use GOD, or THE POWER GREATER THAN ME THAT KEEPS ME CLEAN AND PROVIDES FOR MY NEEDS, i am grateful that, today i can use the power behind the concept to stay clean one more day.
