be defined as the ability to connect with others at the level of my heart and my spirit. lofty words to get rolling this morning, that is for certain. i often struggle with what empathy is or is not for me, and this little passage that i lofted from the daily readings book, feels close to what i am seeking. i certainly know that when i entered recovery, i knew pity and sympathy, as i used those two feelings on a daily basis. Mr T had nothing on me when he said “i pity the fool…”
this morning, i had one of the best dips into the void ever, or at least in recent history. it is wonderful when the noise in my head gets quiet and when it ceases for even a few minutes, that is a bonus. what i “felt” when i got up to start my day, is that i can be kind, i can be polite, i do not have to be a doormat and most important of all, i can feel empathy for those with whom i have built a connection. pity and sympathy are still part of my repertoire and even though the unhoused person who was squatting in the park restroom this morning, got me angry, as i really, really, really had to shit, i feel more than a bit of pity, that he head to use a public restroom to do whatever he was doing in there for two hours. whatever his issue was and is, is not my stuff and i know it was a male person cause i knocked on the door as i pinched my butt cheeks together, waiting for him to exit.
the time has come for me to get going,, as i have agreed to take my sister-in-law to the airport this morning. it is strange and unusual that in this time of a bit of chaos in my life, i can look to see where i might be helpful and choose to do so. just for today, i will seek, empathy, connection and identification with my peers, my family, my loved ones, my friends and the world around me.
