people to walk me through hard times, and i need to reach out and help others as i heal. i could say that i was far from understanding what empathy was, when i came to the rooms and got clean. i have stated that numerous times, but what i can say, is that when my Grandmother does when i was six weeks clean and crying in every meeting i attended, i felt something from my peers. i thought it was sympathy, and later learned it was empathy and that i too, had the capability to feel it and express it properly. it may have taken a long minute, before i realized it, but i actually started to learn how to feel empathy and express in my first experience of grief in those ancient and early days clean.
when i say i listen to the void, it is not a bad thing. the void for me is that place i go in meditation or at least attempt to. some days are certainly better than others. today was a mixed bag, as i was planning out the next chapter in my epic length novel. when i let go of it and allowed myself to experience the quiet, the darkness and the blankness, what i felt was that i have grown since those early days and more importantly have something to give to those who are in the rooms today, a path out of the dark places human emotion and life on its own terms has taken me. i have lost most of my parent's generation since i got clean, i have been unemployed, i lived with cancer and i have been to the top of Africa, doubting myself the entire journey and missing the excitement of doing something extraordinary, until after the fact. all of that has made me who and what i am today and more importantly provides plenty of material to share with my peers. as i make peace with being a retired guy, i will soon have that to offer as well.
it is time to get my ass in gear and head on over to my home group. i know that i am not required to be there, but i also know that being there will make me a bit more balanced and easier going as i walk through this day. just for today, i will practice a bit of empathy, even if it is pity or sympathy i think i am feeling.
