⊗ i tend to think of service only in terms …

of committee service or holding a position at some level, but service goes far beyond this understanding. this morning, i am sitting here thinking about how i am being of service, and what i came up with was to think outside of what i normally consider my service efforts. the examples given in the reading about providing service by working my job, or by sponsoring are good ones. there are lots more examples, but before i get into it, i have to admit i was wrong to post FaceBook last night at the meeting i was attending. when i posted i was acting-out. my feelings were not wrong, my thoughts were probably not wrong, what was wrong was to leave the meeting for that slice of time long enough to gripe about another member. i was not present and there may have been something that i missed that is essential for my recovery. most of all it was disrespectful, and as i am learning if i want to be respected, i need to be respectful.
there are lots of ways for me to serve, the most important is to serve as a vision of HOPE for those who look to me as an example of how to live a program of active recovery. regardless of my personal opinion, i do have the choice today to act in a manner which is appropriate for the situation. i also understand that when i fall short of that ideal, i need to man up and own what i have done wrong and make any corrections necessary.
so where was i? oh yeah. looking at how i can be of service beyond what i normally think of as service. i am sure if i ponder long enough i can come up with a few more examples, BUT what i think i will do now, is to jump into the shower and head out to get some things accomplished before my massage this morning. it is a good day to be clean and i wish everyone a HAPPY NEW YEAR!

THE TAO TEH KING, OR THE TAO AND ITS CHARACTERISTICS

Book 2

1) A master of the art of war has said, 'I do not dare to be the host
(to commence the war); I prefer to be the guest (to act on the defensive).
I do not dare to advance an inch; I prefer to retire a foot.' This
is called marshalling the ranks where there are no ranks; baring the
arms (to fight) where there are no arms to bare; grasping the weapon
where there is no weapon to grasp; advancing against the enemy where
there is no enemy.
