๐คฏ maintaining open-mindedness, ๐คฏ

even with years clean, prevents me from becoming too rigid, from building walls that i cannot see over, helping me to navigate new areas of conflict that arise. i have always liked the parachute and open mind bon mot. it is true that my mind like a parachute does not work if it is not open. across the course of my recovery, keeping an open mind has been one of the daunting tasks i have encountered. i came to the rooms knowing “everything” and certain that there was nothing here for me save for a bit of cultist psycho-babble. little did i realize that it was neither a cult or what they were offering was a way out, and i was looking for a way out of my stint in the justice system
i have many phases in my recovery, once i realized that what i thought i “knew” especially about who and what i was, was dead on wrong. the rigidity with which i held on to my belief structure, despite evidence that i was preventing myself from growing, was enforced by my need to become a “defender of the faith” was it were. as long as i distracted myself with what “those people” were trying to do to the “purity” of the message, i did not have to look at who i was and what i needed to see. it certainly was a nice distraction and more than likely stunted my spiritual growth.
today, as i sit at the doorstep of my resentment list, what i heard was that i need to revisit all those resentments and “issues&$#8221; i have believed i have resolved. i have been pondering this notion for a minute and now, and each time it arises in the quiet, i am more certain that it is the direction i need to take, no matter how “resolved” i may think i am about them. it also shows me that even when i think i am being open-minded, i still have a blind spot or three. as i prepare to head out to have coffee with one of the men i sponsor, i am more than certain that my growing need to write will soon manifest itself in pen to paper. off to the showers and into this day, i go HI-HO!
