my life in active addiction was more like a depressing ad for keeping kids off drugs, than some glam Hollywood epic. nevertheless, when i look back at what i did and why i did some of the shit i did, i cannot help but to laugh out loud. what the fuck was i thinking? the answer to that rhetorical question, was that i was not thin king at all. well, at least until i got caught with my pants down, literally and figuratively. it was more than a bit off-putting, that when i walked into the rooms, those who were already here were cracking jokes about the inane manner in which they behaved. i was aghast that it was some of the same stuff that i swore i was going to take to my grave, but reluctantly i joined in, finding out that that i was far from unique, even when i was doing y best to be different enough to walk away from recovery.
this morning, as the football season approaches, i am dealing with more than a few of my friends and peers that are afraid to let go of an extra roster spot on their fantasy football team. i can see their point, but if they truly considered what was being asked and what the long term benefit to them might be, they would be all over it. they do not see that locking away a player that will never play, just in case, is offset by having that player available on the waiver wire, when he is actually needed. it certainly is an interesting experiment in deferred gratification and all of the members of this league just happen to be addicts with whom i recover.
anyhow, my Sunday morning tasks have been completed and i am ready to get out of the house and enjoy a cigar or two this afternoon. life is not heinous for me at all, in fact it is pretty damn good. yes i have to find a McJob by the end of September, but that is not the case today. it is a good day to be clean and to realize that what i want in the here and now, may be better if i put it off until later.
