α witnessing the recovery of others ω

after being deep in my own shit for the past couple of days, it is nice that the morning meditation allows me to go in another direction this morning. and it is true that one of the greatest gifts i get from sticking around and showing up is seeing others ‘get it!’ what exactly do i mean by ‘get it?’ well it certainly does not mean getting rich, nor does it mean getting laid, although those results are possible. no, what ‘get it’ means to me, is recovery. the reading was a bit cutesy about the outward signs of that process and i do understand what the addicts who wrote this passage were trying to get across. what i get to witness is the process of freedom from active addiction, day by day, minute by minute by those who decide to follow this way of life and really apply the suggestions offered. it warms my heart the first time someone in recovery starts to share about their stuff instead of blaming everyone and everything else for their current situation. i chuckle when i see a new member floating into a meeting on their ‘pink cloud’ and i refrain from telling them that unfortunately ‘this to shall pass.’ but personally, i get the most joy when one of those members decide to ask me to sponsor them, and actually do the work that commitment entails. i actually get to witness their courage as they come to believe that they are truly an addict and their lives are unmanageable, opening the door to the gifts that the fellowship that gave me this new life has to offer. our path is not an easy one, as i was reminded by a newer member last night at a meeting, we are members of one of the most exclusive associations in the world. the entry fee is pretty steep, just give us the pain and misery of your active addiction and do your best to incorporate the spiritual principles of this program in your life but the rewards are beyond counting.
but alas i digress....
for me the joy in watching those who ‘get it’ outweighs the sadness i feel in watching the parade of newcomers who march in and out of our rooms. yes i wish that everyone who finds us will pay the fee and become a part of our fellowship, but the reality of the situation is that i must allow them to come to make that decision for themselves. and that reality is what makes those who ‘get it’ that much more precious.
