to deny this fact for more than a few years, i was certainly propelled into the fellowship that has provided a new manner in which to live, by despair, pain, and fear. it did not take a long time, for me to harness all of that into a passion that consumed me and transformed me into the defender of the faith and the ONE that carried the “pure” message of recovery. i took on all heretics and served the fellowship with all that i had, to the exclusion of any sort of life. between work, school, step work and service, i had absolutely no time left for anything or anyone else. as i stayed clean, worked some steps and started to grow, i began to see that perhaps, i needed to look at what i was doing and step back into the crowd and let things play out as they will.
today, i am still passionate about recovery and the message of hope i carry. i am certainly not as loud, nor aggressive about what i believe, but i have very strong beliefs about what is and what is not recovery. drug replacement therapy, might be recovery, depending on the willingness and open-mindedness of that addict seeking recovery. therapy, psychology and counseling is not recovery, but i see them as outside help for those who may need more than just living a program to get to the place where they are comfortable with themselves. for me, at least up to this point, recovery has been more than enough to uncover what makes me tick and to provider a path out of the darkness. as a result, i still feel passionate about what recovery has to offer and would suggest this manner of living to anyone who may ask, and explain why, with great gusto.
so i am undecided about how and where to spend my afternoon today. my laundry is done, i have run for an hour, i have had lunch and showered, a typical Sunday morning for me. i could just chill in the backyard and enjoy this Summer weather, of i could go spend several hours in a dark and smoke-filled room, watching golf and tennis, while shooting the shit with some Brothers of the Leaf. both options are equally appealing to me, which totally sucks. i think, however the backyard feels like the easier, softer and cheaper way, as i will not spend any money, on our patio, well aty least i do not plan on doing so.
